A new way to record on Mac, with spotlight zooms

  • zoom

Recording in the Mac app starts from a new window, and screen recordings get a spotlight that follows your cursor while you zoom in.

Choose what to record

Every Record button in the Mac app, including the menu bar and Shift+Cmd+2, opens Choose what to record. Pick Full screen, Custom area, Window, or Phone, then choose a camera, a microphone, and system audio by name. Auto zoom, the countdown, hiding desktop icons, and a teleprompter script are all on the same screen. If a permission is missing, an Allow button sits right next to it.

While you record

The recording bar adds Restart and a microphone level, and asks before restarting or discarding a take. The camera bubble now shows your camera live, appears before the countdown, can be dragged, and comes as a circle or rounded square in three sizes.

After you stop

A progress bar shows saving and uploading, and the editor opens on top with your zooms already applied. Uploads run in parallel, so the editor opens sooner.

Spotlight zooms

In the Record panel's Zoom section, turn on Spotlight to dim everything around the cursor while a zoom is on, or around the text caret while you type. Dim and Size set how dark the rest of the frame gets and how big the clear circle is. Keystroke badges now stay where you put them during a zoom, auto zoom splits long stretches of clicking or typing into shorter zooms, and the cursor hides more reliably when you stop moving.
